Molecular Laboratory
A Molecular Laboratory performs genotyping for the following red cell antigens:
- RhCE
- Kidd
- MNS
- Dombrock
- Catwright
- Kell
- Duffy
- Diego
- Colton
Molecular testing is also performed for platelet antigens, HPA-1a/b.
The benefits of blood group genotyping:
- Provides an accurate genotype and predicted phenotype for patients when serology is limited due to recent transfusion, multiple transfusions, or patient red cells coated with immunoglobins.
- Provides alternate method for blood typing when antisera is not available.
- Provides extensive donor screening for relevant red blood cell antigens in a timely manner.
